James - our resident Night Vision and Thermal expert - reviews the revolutionary new Night Vision Add On, the BASE Optics NV90.

...

Ever since the Pard NV007 came out a few years ago, the Rear Add-On market was blown wide open with an affordable piece of kit that transformed your day Scope into a Night Vision Scope.

Since then, however, there hasn't been a piece of Night Vision tech that's been cheap whilst at the same time offering incredible performance. Having taken the NV90 out, that has changed.

This new unit now allows anyone to go out and transform their existing day Scope into a high-performing Night Vision device. Below is my review of the product in the field and what you can expect to get out of it.

COST

This is a big point.

In the past, a unit that costs £149.95 would ring alarm bells and bring along thoughts of buy cheap, buy twice, but from seeing how well the BASE NV90 performs, you will know that this is not the case.

Don’t get me wrong it is not going to be the best on the market but at the end of the day, the unit itself is aimed at Airgun/Rimfire use. That said, and having used this on my .204, .243 and .270 it was brilliant on all of them.

So the cost might reflect some of the design and internal menus but it does not affect the quality of image that this unit produces.

ERGONOMICS

The lightweight nature and the compact size of the unit makes it stand out when it comes to comparing the unit to its competitors.

A really good eye relief is very easily achievable with the unit, with or without the rubber eyepiece.

The buttons have a very easy layout and you get a very positive response from each click as you go through the system.

I especially like the range of mag of 1-4x digital and I'm a really big fan of the unit automatically turning on at x2 zoom. It allows you to set up quickly if required.

The onboard IR has a great detection range of up to 250m, maybe 300m on a clear night, however, I would say you would achieve a positive identification at approximately 150m.

IMAGE QUALITY

This was a real shock!

For a unit at this price point, the unit is second to none.

It presents a high-quality image that allows you to positively identify your quarry to carry out an efficient and effective shot.

Combined with a decent refresh rate and a very adaptable set of focus dials, it is extremely easy to set up on your target.

SUMMARY

Overall, I cannot reiterate enough as to how impressed I was with this unit.

I am confident in saying that the BASE NV90 is going to make a big impact on the Rear Add-On market.

It’s never going to be the best unit on the market but it passes all its requirements with flying colours.
