Ade from Optics Warehouse has seen Scope Mounts evolve over time. Here he shares something he's noticed with the Picatinny Rail.
...
I have been lucky to have been in the Shooting industry for a fair few years and throughout my time I have seen many things evolve, not so much in the Firearms themselves but certainly in the Mounts and Optics side of things.
Long gone are the days of shops having to keep hundreds of different Mounts; Tikka, Sako, Ruger etc. Many of these are indeed still available but much simpler now is the option to convert these dedicated mounting systems with a standard Picatinny Rail for which conversions are available for most nowadays, especially on Dovetail receivers where the Picatinny Rail greatly enhances stability and security.

Along with quick-release mounts, if used, this also allows a visual reference (a particular slot) to refit a ring set into, which cant really be done with the same accuracy otherwise. This simplifies the choice of rings vastly by having 3-4 tube diameter options along with 2-3 heights - so much simpler for the retailers and you, the customer.
This also now provides the user with the option to fit Night Vision Optics, which most are supplied with a Picatinny mounting system that would have been hard work, if not impossible to fit previously.
