Driven Boar Hunting is an adrenaline-pumping experience and a time when you need a Scope that you can rely on. Boar can be under 10 yards or out to 100 yards away meaning you have to react quickly to an ever-changing situation.
In this high-pressure environment, you will need a Scope you know is fit for purpose.
With that in mind here are some things you might want to consider.
RETICLE
A charging Boar moves quickly and you won’t have time to work out precise holdovers. A busy tactical/target-style reticle will not only slow you down but also get in the way. Most reticles used for Boar hunting are simple German dot style reticles with a bright illumination designed for daytime use.
MAGNIFICATION
As Boar shooting is more reactive than Stalking you will need a Scope with a true 1x magnification to allow you to keep both eyes open and provide you with a wide field of view to make target acquisition quick and instinctive. Higher magnifications of the 6-10x range will allow you to hit the Boar at further distances without introducing too much “wobble” from a standing position.
PARALLAX
Driven Boar Scopes do not have adjustable parallaxes. Instead they have a fixed parallax distance usually set at 100 yards. This makes the Scope simple to use so that you won’t have to make any adjustments. You can simply spot your target and shoot.
GLASS QUALITY
It is important to choose a Scope with the best quality glass you can afford. This is because you need high light transmission as you will be shooting in mainly woodland areas in low contrast environments.
OBJECTIVE LENS
Most Scopes for Driven Boar have a smaller objective lens; usually 24mm in diameter. This is because it provides the user with a very good depth perception and allows for instinctive judging of distances for your prey. While larger objectives will allow more light to pass through the Scope, the low magnification of Boar Scopes means they do not require this so long as the Scope is built with quality glass.
